Château Margaux, in?the Médoc area near Bordeaux, produces one of the most famous wines in the world. Château Margaux has had the title of Premier Grand Cru since 1855 and shares this title with only four other Châteaux: Lafite, Latour, Mouton and Haut-Brion. Thearea has one of the best soils in the Medoc region. Plots for its wine production are essentially the same as those that were cultivated in 1855 - these are exclusively located in the commune of Margaux, of few of these being slightly oriented towards Gironde. The soil consists of a homogeneous layer with a thickness of between 4 and 11 meters of fine to medium gravel that was thrust through the Garonne during the Günz glacial period. It is relatively rich in limestone and is characterized by an excellent capacity for holding water, forcing the vines to extend their roots to considerable depth. Their red wine is prepared according to Bordeaux tradition: after a three week maceration period in large wooden vats, it is matured for 18 to 24 months in new oak barrels. The wine is bottled in an unfiltered state.
