Goes well with
White meat, poultry, medium seasoned dishes, mild soft cheeses
Very dark cherry red colour, an aromatic bouquet at its prime, hints of plum jam, a delicately spicy nose of tobacco and vanilla, round on the attack with a rich concentration of fruit, ample, very full-bodied with good structure. A strong, classy wine.
This wine takes its name from the eponymous peninsula, Salento, which stretches over 100 km long and 40 km wide, in the southeastern part of the Italian peninsula, south of Puglia, in the heel of the boot. This region is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world: the Phoenicians and the Greeks planted vines here over 3000 years ago. Unlike other southern regions, Salento is almost devoid of mountains and is made up of plateaus and plains. A hot, dry climate prevails with low rainfall, so artificial irrigation must be used. The soil consists mainly of limestone, clay and marl. Puglia is host to the majority of southern Italy's grape varieties, where nearly 80% are red wines. Many of them are native varieties whose cultivation has received special attention in the last fewyears. The region produces white, rosé and red wines.
