Grenache, Mazuela, Cariñena, Cabernet Sauvignon
Goes well with
Paella with chicken, fine cold meats, risotto
Clear ruby. Aromas still a bit closed, with graphite, a distinctly woody note, violets, game, leather and sour cherry. Elegantly juicy on the palate, with ripe, classical tannins, finely structured acidity and dense fruit concentration. Well-structured on the finish.

The Maius winery is located in a place called “Barranc de la Bruixa” (or “Witch’s Cliff”) in the municipality of La Morera de Montsant in the Priorat wine-growing region of Catalonia. The property is south-oriented, its soils a mixture of calcareous stone, gravel, rocks and of course llicorella (Catalan for “slate”). Low-yield old vines, narrow vine rows and a round, elevated water-collecting facility mean that less irrigation is required, lending the wine its special character. The winery only uses its own grapes, primarily from seven- to eight-year-old vines, in combination with some older vines that already existed when the property was first acquired. The cellar building is situated in the middle of the vineyards, blending into the contours of the land, and using solar energy and rainwater. Some 85 per cent of the building is underground. This helps to keep the inside temperature at around 15 degrees Celsius. The building’s wooden doors, concrete walls and flat stone roof will blend into the landscape as their surfaces age naturally over the course of time.
