Degustation notes

Clear tawny red colour, a nose that combines floral and spicy nuances as well as tobacco and chocolate. Earth and plum, spice, licorice, chocolate and leather aromas on the palate, evident, silky tannins that are perfectly blended into the wine. An intense, long finish. An endlessly pleasant wine to drink.

Special notes

According to connoisseurs, Barolo is among the best Italian red wine. As early as the nineteenth century, Barolo was considered to be the wine of kings and still is today; a wine for special occasions. Originally, Barolo was cultivated in the Langhe hills in Piedmont, and the commune of Barolo gave it its name. It obtained the DOC quality designation in 1966, and was then entitled to the DOCG designation in 1980. Unlike many other prestigious red wines, Barolo is not a combined wine but is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. According to tradition, the wine undergoes fermentation in large oak barrels for a period of up to 2 months, which has the effectof intensely concentrating its aromas and creating extremely tight, powerful tannins. Due to the high tannin content, the wine mustage between 15 to 20 years. But since the late 1970s, the appellation also produces wines that can be drunk much sooner. Today, themaceration is normally reduced to 10 days, which means that a Barolo can be drunk after 5 or 6 years. The Pio Cesare Winery is located at the heart of Alba, a town known as the white truffle city, that takes pride in a tradition dating back over a hundred years. The current owners, Giuseppe Boffa (his wife is the granddaughter of Pio Cesare's founder) and Pio Boffa are traditionalists at heart.
