Intense ruby. Still somewhat restrained on the nose, with sour cherry, bay leaves, ripe blackcurrant, tar, tobacco and ethereal herbal notes. Full-bodied on the palate, with voluptuous, dense fruit, good balanced tannins and a long, succulent finish. Decant one to two hours before drinking.

The small La Massa estate in the heart of the Chianti Classico region near Panzano has been producing wine since the 14th century. Giampaolo Motta, the owner, has been achieving a new level of excellence since he acquired the estate in 1991. The enthusiastic self-made man from Naples was able to gain experience during apprenticeships at renowned Chianti Classico estates such as John Dunkley’s Fattoria di Riecine and Castello dei Rampolla. Together with his team, he replanted many of the beautiful south-facing vineyards in the Conca d’Oro at a higher density. This resulted in crops of the same size with lower yields per vine. The resident winemaker, Carlo Ferrini, and his colleagues are uncompromising in their pursuit of perfection, benefiting from contacts with a successful generation of vintners that includes Stéphane Derenoncourt and Stephan von Neipperg in Saint-Émilion.
