Rosé – the heavenly light wine made from red grapes

Rosé lovers swear by the fruity freshness of rosé wine, which goes so well with light, summery dishes. Rosé wines span the colour spectrum from pale salmon to bold cherry red. How is rosé produced?

Some people still believe the myth that rosé is made from a mixture of white and red wines. However, a true rosé is not a mixture at all. It is an entirely independent wine variety made from red grapes. There are three different methods for producing rosé:

  • Saignée method
    For this method, the grape skins remain in the must for a while to allow some of the colour to bleed in. Once the must is the right colour and has therefore also absorbed the necessary aromas, part of it is siphoned off and fermented into rosé. The remaining must is fermented with the grape skins into a full-bodied red wine. Rosé produced using the saignée method has a relatively dark, bold colour.
  • Maceration
    Similar to the saignée method, maceration also requires the grape skins to remain in the must for a little while. This may be a few minutes or several hours, depending on the desired intensity. The amount of time influences the intensity of the colour and flavour. Brief contact between the must and grape skins produces very light, pale rosé wines, while longer contact results in a stronger colour and flavour.
  •  Pressing
    The must and grape skins do not come into contact for this method. Instead, the red grapes are pressed straight into must. This is very pale in colour and takes on very little of the aromas from the grapes. The must is then fermented in the same way as white wine. This produces very pale and light rosé wines.
